Where to stay on Koh Tao

Koh Tao is small, but each corner has its own character — from the buzzy Sairee strip to the quiet, sunset-facing west coast. Here is who each area suits, and how to pick the right base for your trip.

Sairee Beach — the lively heart

Sairee is Koh Tao's longest beach and social centre: dive schools back to back, beach bars, restaurants and the island's nightlife. It is walkable, convenient and fun, and a natural choice if you are here to learn to dive or want people around. The trade-off is noise — the bars run late — so it is less ideal if you have come to unwind in peace.

Mae Haad — central & practical

Mae Haad is the pier town where the ferries arrive. It is the island's hub for banks, shops, cafés and good restaurants, and central to everywhere else. It suits travellers who value being close to the action and the pier — handy for shorter stays — without the full Sairee party.

Chalok Baan Kao — relaxed south

On the south coast, Chalok Baan Kao is quieter and more low-key, with a sheltered bay, easygoing restaurants and a couple of the island's best viewpoints nearby. It is a comfortable middle ground — calmer than Sairee, but still with things within walking distance.

The quiet west coast & Sai Nuan

South of Mae Haad, the coast turns quiet and green. The Sai Nuan hillside looks west over the sea, reached by a short drive or a longtail from Mae Haad, with a few hidden beaches and beach bars and very little noise. This is the island's most private, scenic side — and where the sunset lands straight over the water.

Why a private-pool villa suits couples & adults

If your trip is about privacy, sunsets and slowing down, a private-pool villa on the west-coast hillside is hard to beat. You get your own pool, your own terrace and your own view — no shared sunbeds, no crowds — with the island's calmest side on your doorstep.

This is exactly where LUM sits: private-pool sunset villas set into the Sai Nuan hillside, spaced apart for privacy, facing the sea. Each villa has a private pool and an open terrace built around the sunset, which makes it well suited to couples, honeymoons and adults wanting to switch off. It is about ten minutes from Mae Haad pier and a few minutes from the nearest beach — secluded, but never far. LUM is booked directly with the owners, with no OTA fees, and we meet you at the pier when you arrive.

FAQ

What is the best area to stay in Koh Tao?

It depends on what you want. Sairee is the busy main beach for nightlife and diving; Mae Haad is central and handy for the pier and restaurants; Chalok Baan Kao in the south is more relaxed; and the quiet west coast around Sai Nuan is the most private and scenic, facing the sunset. Couples and adults who want privacy tend to prefer the west-coast hillside.

Where should couples stay on Koh Tao?

Couples usually prefer the quieter south and west of the island over the busy Sairee strip. The Sai Nuan hillside on the west coast is ideal for a romantic stay — secluded, sunset-facing and away from the bars — which is exactly why LUM's private-pool villas sit there, spaced apart for privacy.

Is Sairee Beach too busy?

Sairee is Koh Tao's liveliest area — a long beach lined with dive schools, restaurants and bars, and the centre of the island's nightlife. That makes it great for first-time divers and social travellers, but noisier at night. If you want calm and privacy, stay on the quieter west coast or south and visit Sairee for the day.

Why choose a private-pool villa on Koh Tao?

A private-pool villa gives you your own space, your own pool and your own sunset, without sharing facilities or stepping over sunbeds. On a hillside like LUM's, above the quiet west coast, it means privacy, sea views and a calm base for two — well suited to couples, honeymoons and adults who want to switch off. LUM is booked directly with the owners, with no OTA fees.

Is the west coast of Koh Tao far from everything?

No. Koh Tao is small, so nowhere is truly far. LUM's hillside is about ten minutes from the main Mae Haad pier and a few minutes from the nearest beach, with restaurants and dive shops a short hop away. You get seclusion and sunsets while still being close to the action when you want it.
