Sairee is Koh Tao's longest beach and social centre: dive schools back to back, beach bars, restaurants and the island's nightlife. It is walkable, convenient and fun, and a natural choice if you are here to learn to dive or want people around. The trade-off is noise — the bars run late — so it is less ideal if you have come to unwind in peace.
Mae Haad is the pier town where the ferries arrive. It is the island's hub for banks, shops, cafés and good restaurants, and central to everywhere else. It suits travellers who value being close to the action and the pier — handy for shorter stays — without the full Sairee party.
